(AP) ? A 31-year-old woman accused of shoving a man to his death in front of a subway train because she believed he was Muslim laughed and smiled during a court hearing where she was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Erika Menendez, 31, was charged Saturday night with murder as a hate crime after she told police she spontaneously pushed Sunando Sen, according to prosecutors.

"There is no reason. I just pushed him in front of the train because I thought it would be cool," she said, according to the Queens district attorney's office.

She laughed so hard during her arraignment in Queens criminal court that Judge Gia Morris told her lawyer: "You're going to have to have your client stop laughing."

Defense attorney Dietrich Epperson said Menendez's behavior in court was no different from how she had been acting when he spoke to her privately, and said his client didn't really think the proceedings were funny. He represented her for the arraignment only and had no further comment. Menendez was held without bail and ordered to have a mental health exam.

Prosecutors said she pushed the 46-year-old India native to his death because she blamed "Muslims, Hindus and Egyptians" for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks because I hate Hindus and Muslims ? ever since 2001 when they put down the twin towers I've been beating them up," Menendez told police, according to the district attorney's office.

Friends and co-workers said Sen, a native of Calcutta, was Hindu. He had lived in Queens for decades and was a graphic designer and copy shop owner. Sen was standing on an elevated platform of the 7 train that travels between Manhattan and Queens when he was shoved from behind as the train entered the station.

Witnesses told police a woman had been mumbling to herself and was sitting on a bench behind Sen until the train pulled in, then shoved him from behind. She then fled.

Police released a sketch and surveillance footage of a woman running from the subway station. Menendez was arrested after a passer-by saw her on the street and thought she looked like the wanted suspect. Witnesses identified her in a lineup and she was questioned by police, when she implicated herself, according to police and prosecutors.

Angel Luis Santiago, who used to work at the Queens building where Menendez's mother and stepfather live, said he was shocked by her arrest.

"It surprised me what she did," he said. "She never acted that way."

Menendez's next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 14.

Sen was the second man to die after being pushed in front of a New York City subway train this month. Ki-Suck Han was killed in a midtown Manhattan subway station on Dec. 3. A homeless man was arrested and charged with murder in that case and is awaiting trial. He claimed he acted in self-defense.

Such subway deaths are rare, but transit officials said last week they would consider installing barriers with sliding doors on some subway platforms. Other cities including Paris and London have installed such barriers.

Obama's Deadly Plan for the Death Tax - Daniel ... - Townhall Finance

In some ways, it would be fun to be a leftist.

No, I?m not talking about living a life of idleness and letting others pay my bills, though I suppose that?s tempting to some people.

And I?m not talking about becoming a Washington insider and using corrupt connections to obtain unearned wealth, though I confess I?m actually friends with some of those people.

Instead, I?m talking about what it must be like to engage in reckless demagoguery and personal smears.

Remember during the presidential campaign when Mitt Romney was ? for all intents and purposes ? accused of causing a woman?s death because of his actions at Bain Capital?

The pro-Obama Super-PAC that produced that ad relied on indirect connections and overlooked some very salient facts that completely disproved even the indirect connections.

But even though the ad was exposed as maliciously false, the folks who put it together probably laughed all the way to the bank.

With this in mind, maybe it?s time to publicly ask why President Obama wants to kill old people.

?Time for your death panel appointment?

This isn?t a blog post about Obamacare, though there certainly are enough horror stories from the United Kingdom to make us fearful of government-run healthcare.

I?m referring instead to what might happen because of Obama?s proposal for a much more onerous death tax, which is part of his class-warfare agenda and would take effect in just a couple of days.

It seems that there?s good evidence this may lead to some premature deaths. CNBC reports.

Many families are faced with a stark proposition. If the life of an elderly wealthy family member extends into 2013, the tax bills will be substantially higher. An estate that could bequest $3 million this year will leave just $1.9 million after taxes next year. Shifting a death from January to December could produce $1.1 million in tax savings. It may seem incredible to contemplate pulling the plug on grandma to save tax dollars. While we know that investors will sell stocks to avoid rising capital gains taxes, accelerating the death of a loved one seems at least a bit morbid?perhaps even evil. Will people really make life and death decisions based on taxes? Do we don our green eye shades when it comes to something this serious? There is good evidence that there is some ?elasticity? in the timing of important decisions about life and death.

And what does that mean? Well, according to some of the academic research, the President is going to have proverbial blood on his hands.

Gans and Leigh looked into another natural experiment. In 1979, Australia abolished its federal inheritance taxes. Official records show that approximately 50 deaths were shifted from the week before the abolition to the week after. ?Although we cannot rule out the possibility that our results are driven by misreporting, our results imply that over the very short run, the death rate may be highly elastic with respect to the inheritance tax rate,? Gans and Leigh write. This isn?t just something peculiar to Australia. Economists Wojciech Kopczuk of Columbia University and Joel Slemrod of the University of Michigan studied how mortality rates in the United States were changed by falling or rising estate taxes. They note that while the evidence of ?death elasticity? is ?not overwhelming,? every $10,000 in available tax savings increases the chance of dying in the low-tax period by 1.6 percent. This is true both when taxes are falling, so that people are surviving longer to achieve the tax savings, and when they are rising, so that people are dying earlier, according to Kopczuk and Slemrod. ?Death elasticity? does not necessarily mean that greedy relatives are pulling the plug on the dying or forcing the sickly to extend their lives into a lower taxed period. According to a 2008 paper from University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Doctor G. Stuart Mendenhall, while tax increases give potential heirs large economic incentives to limit care that would prolong life, distressed patients may ?voluntarily trade prolongation of their life past the end [a low tax period] for large ?nancial implications for their kin.

I?ve previously cited the research from Australia, and also wrote a post about incentives to die in 2010, when the death tax temporarily was abolished, so this research makes sense.

What?s the bottom line?

?based on past reactions to changes in taxes, it at least seems likely that some deaths that might otherwise have occurred shortly after January 1 will occur shortly before. Death may slip in ahead of the tax man for some with estates worth over $1 million.

In the grand scheme of things, I have a hard time feeling anguish about some elderly rich guy dying today rather than one week from now. But there is real data to suggest that Obama?s policies will cause premature deaths.

And these premature deaths will only occur because the President is greedy for more revenue from a tax that shouldn?t even exist. Indeed, it?s worth noting that every pro-growth tax reform plan ? such as the flat tax or national sales tax ? eliminates this pernicious form of double taxation.

Since I?m an economist, I can?t resist a final comment about this tax having a terrible impact on capital formation. This is bad for workers, since it translates into lower wages.

And it?s definitely not good for U.S. competitiveness.

P.S. Whatever you do, don?t die in New Jersey.

P.P.S. It?s a morbid topic, but there is such a thing as death tax humor.

condo insurance 38068 Each year, more cars and drivers are on the roads. This could lead to a higher possibility of a collision. Automobile insurance can make the difference between a small setback and a major hassle. So how do you know what type of car insurance you need and the quantity you should purchase? Insurance requirements will differ by state/province, but typically include the following: Liability: This type of insurance coverage will pay for the damage that you are responsible for. These damages can include bodily injury, and property damage. It also covers your defense and court costs if you are sued. State laws typically require standard amounts, but higher amounts can be purchased and are usually recommended. Personal Injury Protection: This type of insurance pays for hospital bills and other medical treatment for you and other people in your car, no matter who was at fault in the crash. It is sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage. State law typically sets minimum amounts. Medical Payments: Medical payment coverage is available in non-no-fault states; it pays despite who may be responsible. All reasonable medical or funeral expenses will be paid for under this type of policy. Collision: Damages resulting from a collision will be paid for under this type of insurance. Comprehensive: Applies if your vehicle is stolen or damaged by causes other than an accident, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured Motorist: Pays for repair and replacement costs when an insured person is in a crash caused by another person who does not have liability coverage. Under-Insured Motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is in a crash caused by another person who does not have the right amount of insurance to cover the total amount of the damages. Other types of coverage, such as emergency road service and car rental, can also be purchased. Your auto insurance payments vary by company and will depend on several factors, including: *Your desired coverage *Your vehicle?s make and model * Your driving record * Your age, gender and marital status * The place where you live Don?t procrastinate buying auto insurance; you shouldn?t drive a car without it. Review your needs, do your research , and with the help of your insurance agent, make the decision that fits you best.

MOSCOW (AP) ? Investigators on Sunday examined flight recorders and other evidence to try to determine the cause of the airliner crash in Moscow that killed five people, an official said.

The Tu-204 belonging to Russian airline Red Wings was carrying eight people, all of them crew members, when it careered off the runway Saturday while landing at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport. It went partly into an adjacent highway, broke into pieces and caught fire.

Four people were pronounced dead soon after the crash and the airline said on its Twitter account that a fifth, a flight attendant, died Sunday. Those who died Saturday were the pilot, co-pilot, flight engineer and another attendant, Red Wings said.

The survivors were reported in critical or serious condition in Moscow hospitals.

Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for Russia's main investigative agency, was quoted by Russian news agencies saying the data recorders were being examined, along with fuel samples. In addition, he said flight documents for the plane have been taken from the airline for examination.

Got a Sony Tube TV with ATSC digital tuner

$25 on Craigslist. Had I offered the lady $5, that would likely have been her highest offer. People have a hard time giving away tube TVs. If someone wants a used tube TV that does not need a converter box, if you are looking at a Sony you can google the model number and Sony esupport will tell you.

I thought it might get me more channels than my Magnavox converter box, connected to an NTSC TV. Actually it gets me fewer. It does not get me dtv channels 60, 20, or 36. I think when you use the magnavox converter box to scan channels it recognizes a lot more marginal channels, including several that will give me no picture. The Sony only saves the stronger channels apparently. Still I like it better because I don't need a second remote for changing channels.

They also have a 34 inch widescreen HD tube TV with ASTC. I just got a 27 inch without HD, just SD.

Sony eSupport - KD-27FS170 - News & Alerts

Is my Sony? television ready for the Digital TV (DTV) transition?

Good news! Your Sony KD-27FS170 television has an ATSC tuner so you will be able to receive over-the-air digital programming without a digital tuner or a converter box.
Note: You may still need a cable box to receive digital cable programming, or to view premium or pay-per-view cable programming.

Background Information

After June 12, 2009, full-power television stations will broadcast in digital only. The switch from analog to digital broadcast television is referred to as the digital TV (DTV) transition. In 1996, the U.S. Congress authorized the distribution of an additional broadcast channel to each broadcast TV station so that they could start a digital broadcast channel while simultaneously continuing their analog broadcast channel.

10 best-paying jobs for community college graduates

4 hrs.

With college tuition costs skyrocketing???an estimated $1 trillion in student loan debt now exceeds credit card debt in the U.S.???many families are rethinking the traditional path to career success. As it turns out, a four-year college degree isn?t the only way to land a good-paying job. A recent?study?by financial literacy website?NerdWallet, based on forecasts by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, reveals that jobs requiring only a two-year associate?s degree will have the highest average growth through 2020.

?The common, accepted advice is to go to school for four years or longer, but there are great opportunities to go for less time and still get a high return on your investment,? says Joseph Audette, VP of financial literacy and education?at NerdWallet. ?It?s not just about going to college. It?s about going with a plan for success.?

The average growth rate of all jobs by 2020 is just 14 percent, while high-growth jobs requiring an associate?s degree will grow by an average of 35 percent. At the same time, associate?s degrees have the shortest payback period. Lower tuition rates coupled with high median earnings on the job means these graduates pay off their tuition in just two years, on average.

Furthermore, many of the jobs that require only an associate?s degree pay more than those requiring a bachelor?s or master?s. ?Why go through additional years of school and have more debt when the job isn?t going to be paying as much?? asks Audette.

According to Nerdwallet?s analysis of the 10 best-paying jobs for associate?s degree holders,?air traffic controllers?come out on top, earning a median salary of $108,000. These students must attend a Federal Aviation Administration certified school and receive long-term on-the-job training. However, while it is very well paid, it?s also stressful and not expected to be a high-growth job.

When comparing the lists of the highest-paying jobs and the fastest-growing jobs that require only an associate?s degree, three jobs emerge as the best.?Registered nurses?earn a median of $65,000 and will grow by 26 percent, with a whopping 3.5 million jobs projected for 2020.?Medical sonographers, who administer ultrasounds, earn $64,000 a year and will grow by 44 percent, and?dental hygienists?earn $68,000 and will grow by 38 percent.

Many of these jobs are health?care and engineering support positions, driven by the aging baby boomer population and the increasing automation of technology and manufacturing machinery. Hiring more support positions versus highly trained professionals is more cost-efficient for employers, says Audette, who expects the trend to continue over the next few decades.

The full list of the 10 best-paying jobs:

In the last decades of the nineteenth century, thanks to the Comillas Lord, the town became a hub of the?incipient Catalan Modernism. The seminary began with some sketches of Jesuit and Engineer Miguel de?Alcolado, later on Joan Martorell and Lluis Domenech i Montaner started to work in the project giving the?building the monumental and desired style.

The building has an academic style plan, with two cloisters with functional rooms and a central body with?significant institutional spaces.?After its abandonment in the 90s, it was in a terrible condition. The most remarkable architectural spaces,?the lobby, the main hall and the church facades had minimal alterations, although they presented a?significant deterioration due to time and lack of use. The rest of the spaces had suffered multiple?interventions that trumped the apparent clarity that promises cloistered architectural type. The diseases?caused by an extremely experimental construction at the time demanded swift action.?The project proposes two complementary intervention degrees in two different areas of the building.

The project proposes two complementary intervention degrees in two different areas of the building.?On one hand, the maintenance and conservation of most artistic spaces, located in the central body,?with extensive renovation to restore its original splendor. The intervention is enriched with small specific?actions intended to qualify and reclaim the spaces. We open holes looking for permeability between?parts of the building, the church gets greater formal autonomy. We design new walls and floors which?naturally mixed with the modernist elements and we recreate a magical space in the mansard on the?auditorium.

? Duccio Malagamba

On the other hand, it raises a more intensive rehabilitation in the cloisters, trying to transform its oppressive?character. We consider there is no need here to keep the same effort restorer we decide to operate?more freely, introducing new programs and technologies as required. We demolish most of the building?and built in vacuum. The brick walls remaining acquire all its expressiveness. We solve most of the project?technical aspects with a new wall, following the traces of the old and obsolete intermediate one.

Ground Floor Plan

The new wall articulates the relationship between visual and functional halls and cloisters, through the?systematic order of their holes. The wall consists of two canvases where white concrete slabs are?supported and they also brace the restored original facades. The wall section organized the intervention?and allows for its hollow interior, breathe and run all the installations. A smooth wall, as a ?stucco??concrete reflects light and contrasts with the marked masonry texture of the original walls. The wall is?folded on the top floor creating a large canopy.

There, we create a glazed perimeter gallery that?enhances the functionality of the rooms of this floor, qualified by the demolitions of the mansard slab,?converting the attics in unexpected skylights.?The different floors were arranged according to the new wall and the position of the cores and services,?which are arranged precisely at the towers, generating flexible spaces that can be allocated to multiple?uses. The new spaces are complemented by the church, which should become the great hall.

? Duccio Malagamba

New uses require a large space for service installations. This new building appears under the old football?pitch, taking advantage of the topography, in a long block with the same length as the Seminar.?In the rehabilitation of the central body and the facades, it is worth remark the different structural?interventions, artisanal glass restorations, paintings, bronzes, plasters ? and the emergence of new?materials in situ terrazzo, walnut baseboards, Cumella tiles ? In the cloisters, the concrete of the slabs?and the wall gain all the attention, contrasting with the whitewashed historic factory. Pavements are?made of Douglas pine and we solve the roof with deep beams of reinforced masonry.?In the first phase, it has been rehabilitated the eastern cloister and the central body. We hope that we?can continue the works to recover this important building.

Woman charged with hate-crime murder in death of man pushed in ...

A woman is reportedly in custody in connection with the death of a man who was struck by an oncoming NYC subway.

By NBC News staff and wire services

NEW YORK?? A 31-year-old Bronx woman was charged Saturday with second-degree murder as a hate crime in the death of a man who was shoved in front of a speeding subway train, New York City authorities said.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown identified the woman as Erika Menendez, 31. He said in a statement that she was awaiting arraignment in Queens Criminal Court.

Sunando Sen, a 46-year-old Queens resident who was born in India and ran a printing shop, died Thursday night when a woman who had been muttering to herself on a train platform in Queens suddenly knocked him on the tracks as a train entered the station.

Brown's statement said that Menendez admitted pushing Sen and said she "pushed a Muslim" onto the tracks because she hated Hindus and Muslims ever since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. ?

Brown also said:

"The defendant is accused of committing what is every subway?commuter's worst nightmare - being suddenly and senselessly pushed into the path of an oncoming train.?The victim was allegedly shoved from behind and had no chance to defend himself. Beyond that, the?hateful remarks allegedly made by the defendant and which precipitated the defendant's actions can never?be tolerated by a civilized society."

The woman fled after the attack Thursday. Police released security camera video showing her running from the station.

The attack was the second time this month that someone was pushed to their death in a New York City subway station. A homeless man was arrested in early December and accused of shoving a man in front of a train in Times Square. He is awaiting trial, and claimed he acted in self-defense.

Further details on how police managed to identify the suspect in Sen's death were not immediately available.

Investigators had been following up on tips from people who had seen the security video and were checking homeless shelters and psychiatric units in an attempt to identify the woman.

It was unclear whether she had any connection to Sen. Witnesses told police the two hadn't interacted on the platform as they both waited for the train.

Iran: US plane made emergency landing 3 weeks ago

(AP) ? An Iranian semi-official news agency is reporting that a small American commercial plane made an emergency landing in an Iranian airport earlier this month.

The Sunday report by Mehr quotes Mahmoud Rasoulinejad, who is head of the state-owned Iran Airports Company, as saying the plane landed some three weeks ago in the airport of the southern city of Ahvaz due to technical failure.

Rasoulinejad says three passengers left Iran for Arab countries in the Gulf, but the plane is under repair in the airport. He says it will soon be ready.

He did not elaborate. It was not clear why the announcement was not made earlier.

Iran and U.S. are at odds over Tehran's controversial nuclear program. The West suspects it is aimed at weapons development, a charge Iran denies.

Two Held Over Church Organist Murder

Two men were being questioned on Saturday night about the murder of church organist Alan Greaves, who was attacked on his way to midnight mass on Christmas Eve.

Mr Greaves, 68, was just yards from his church in High Green, Sheffield, when he was badly beaten.

He was discovered by a member of the public and taken to hospital but died from his injuries on Thursday night.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "A man in his 20s and a man in his 40s, both from Sheffield, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently in custody helping police.

"Officers are searching a number of properties in the area and there has been a high-visibility police presence in High Green today."

Detectives are still appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information about the murder.

Mr Greaves, a grandfather and father-of-four, died after sustaining serious head injuries at about 11.15pm on Christmas Eve after leaving his home to go to St Saviour's Church.

Police are treating his death as murder and have said the motive for the attack is unclear.

His widow, church community worker Maureen Greaves, 63, told The Sun last night: "There was no motive.

"We are devastated. It is just not what you expect, somebody to walk down the street and get murdered - and at this time of year as well, it's just dreadful."

Canon Simon Bessant, from St Saviour's, described Mr Greaves as a "good man" who fell victim to an evil act.

He said: "He was a gentle soul. He wasn't foolish - he would have handled the situation as best as anyone would, but we don't know what he encountered."

The Bishop of Sheffield, Dr Steven Croft, has sent a message to every parish in his diocese asking for prayers for Mr Greaves, his widow and their family.

In it, Dr Croft said: "Alan Greaves died on Thursday night following injuries received in an attack on Christmas Eve as he was on his way to church.

"He was a Reader and organist at St Saviour's Mortomley and High Green in Sheffield.

"He was married to Maureen, a Church Army Evangelist, and both Alan and Maureen were widely involved in serving their local community for many years. They have four grown up children.

"Please would you hold Alan's family and the church family at High Green, with Simon Bessant the Vicar and the wider family of Church Army, in your prayers in the coming days and especially this Sunday morning.

"I plan to be with the congregation at High Green on Sunday morning."

    Engadget's CES 2013 Preview Laptops

It's incredible to think that when CES 2012 kicked off back in January we had only reviewed five Ultrabooks. Yep, five. Enough to count on one hand. Even weirder, we still hadn't seen that many by the time we wrapped our coverage of the show. Sure, a few companies teased ultraportables they planned to release later in the year, but these only represented a slice of the 100-plus models slated to launch in 2012. And that didn't even include all the Ultrabook imposters! Ever hear of Sleekbooks? Ultrathins? Whoever said PCs are dead clearly doesn't have to review them for a living.

New immigration battle: Driver's licenses | 89.3 KPCC

    David McNew/Getty Images

Cheering Latinos hold a sign thanking California Governor Gray Davis for signing the controversial SB 60 into law, allowing undocumented immigrants to get a California driver's license September 5, 2003 in Los Angeles, California.

In a sign of growing opposition to President Obama's immigration policy, Iowa has become the latest state to deny driver's licenses to young illegal immigrants who receive deferments from deportation.

Iowa joins Michigan, Nebraska and Arizona in denying licenses or non-operator identification cards because, officials say, Obama's deferred action program doesn't grant legal status in the United States. Officials in each state cite laws restricting the licenses to foreigners who reside here legally.

The program, which began in August, offers a renewable two-year reprieve for qualified young people who were brought to the United States as children. Recipients also gain permission to work here legally. So far, more than 355,000 applicants have been accepted and nearly 103,000 have been approved, according to the latest government figures.

Iowa's Department of Transportation Director Paul Trombino III said in a statement:

"The Iowa DOT understands the exercising of this prosecutorial discretion by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security does not grant lawful status or a lawful immigration path to persons granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status. Rather, it is prosecutorial discretion extended in a blanket fashion to persons who are not lawfully authorized to be present in the United States."

Republicans have criticized the program as backdoor amnesty designed to boost Latino support for Obama. The four states denying licenses are led by Republican governors. One of them, Nebraska's Dave Heineman, has pledged to deny not only licenses, but welfare benefits and other services to illegal immigrants, unless required by state law.

Washington and New Mexico are among states that issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, although New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, who is a Republican, wants her state's enabling law repealed. Illinois could be next to issue licenses after the state Senate recently approved a bill.

At issue is whether the federal program's authorization to stay and work here legally also confers temporary legalized status.

Iowa officials cite the memorandum issued by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano that outlines the new policy: "This memorandum confers no substantive right, immigration status or pathway to citizenship."

Immigrant advocates say people in deferred action status qualify for licenses under the 2005 Real ID Act, which they have used to file lawsuits to overturn the bans in Arizona and Michigan.

The Real ID law, an anti-terrorism measure aimed at creating a national driver's license system, lists people in deferred action status among the authorized noncitizens who are eligible to obtain a temporary license.

Immigrant advocates also say the states are encroaching on the federal government's authority to set immigration policy, a separation reinforced by the Supreme Court ruling this year that severely weakened Arizona's immigration enforcement law.

"Deferred action has existed for decades and decades. It is a form of lawful presence, just like other forms of administrative relief under our immigration laws," says Thomas Saenz, president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, which is one of the groups suing in Arizona.

"There's really no legal or constitutional support for what these states are doing," says Saenz. "Suggesting that they are not here lawfully is a rhetorical political move that a number of these states are engaging in."

FBI removes many redactions in Marilyn Monroe file

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? FBI files on Marilyn Monroe that could not be located earlier this year have been found and re-issued, revealing the names of some of the movie star's communist-leaning acquaintances who drew concern from government officials and her own entourage.

But the files, which previously had been heavily redacted, do not contain any new information about Monroe's death 50 years ago. Letters and news clippings included in the file show the bureau was aware of theories the actress had been killed, but they do not show that any effort was undertaken to investigate the claims. Los Angeles authorities concluded Monroe's death was a probable suicide.

Recently obtained by The Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act, the updated FBI files do show the extent the agency was monitoring Monroe for ties to communism in the years before her death in August 1962.

The records reveal that some in Monroe's inner circle were concerned about her association with Frederick Vanderbilt Field, who was disinherited from his wealthy family over his leftist views.

A trip to Mexico earlier that year to shop for furniture brought Monroe in contact with Field, who was living in the country with his wife in self-imposed exile. Informants reported to the FBI that a "mutual infatuation" had developed between Field and Monroe, which caused concern among some in her inner circle, including her therapist, the files state.

"This situation caused considerable dismay among Miss Monroe's entourage and also among the (American Communist Group in Mexico)," the file states. It includes references to an interior decorator who worked with Monroe's analyst reporting her connection to Field to the doctor.

Field's autobiography devotes an entire chapter to Monroe's Mexico trip, "An Indian Summer Interlude." He mentions that he and his wife accompanied Monroe on shopping trips and meals and he only mentions politics once in a passage on their dinnertime conversations.

"She talked mostly about herself and some of the people who had been or still were important to her," Field wrote in "From Right to Left." ''She told us about her strong feelings for civil rights, for black equality, as well as her admiration for what was being done in China, her anger at red-baiting and McCarthyism and her hatred of (FBI director) J. Edgar Hoover."

Under Hoover's watch, the FBI kept tabs on the political and social lives of many celebrities, including Frank Sinatra, Charlie Chaplin and Monroe's ex-husband Arthur Miller. The bureau has also been involved in numerous investigations about crimes against celebrities, including threats against Elizabeth Taylor, an extortion case involving Clark Gable and more recently, trying to solve who killed rapper Notorious B.I.G.

The AP had sought the removal of redactions from Monroe's FBI files earlier this year as part of a series of stories on the 50th anniversary of Monroe's death. The FBI had reported that it had transferred the files to a National Archives facility in Maryland, but archivists said the documents had not been received. A few months after requesting details on the transfer, the FBI released an updated version of the files that eliminate dozens of redactions.

For years, the files have intrigued investigators, biographers and those who don't believe Monroe's death at her Los Angeles area home was a suicide.

A 1982 investigation by the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office found no evidence of foul play after reviewing all available investigative records, but noted that the FBI files were "heavily censored."

That characterization intrigued the man who performed Monroe's autopsy, Dr. Thomas Noguchi. While the DA investigation concluded he conducted a thorough autopsy, Noguchi has conceded that no one will likely ever know all the details of Monroe's death. The FBI files and confidential interviews conducted with the actress' friends that have never been made public might help, he wrote in his 1983 memoir "Coroner."

"On the basis of my own involvement in the case, beginning with the autopsy, I would call Monroe's suicide 'very probable,'" Noguchi wrote. "But I also believe that until the complete FBI files are made public and the notes and interviews of the suicide panel released, controversy will continue to swirl around her death."

Monroe's file begins in 1955 and mostly focuses on her travels and associations, searching for signs of leftist views and possible ties to communism. One entry, which previously had been almost completely redacted, concerned intelligence that Monroe and other entertainers sought visas to visit Russia that year.

The file continues up until the months before her death, and also includes several news stories and references to Norman Mailer's biography of the actress, which focused on questions about whether Monroe was killed by the government.

For all the focus on Monroe's closeness to suspected communists, the bureau never found any proof she was a member of the party.

"Subject's views are very positively and concisely leftist; however, if she is being actively used by the Communist Party, it is not general knowledge among those working with the movement in Los Angeles," a July 1962 entry in Monroe's file states.
