NPD: Windows 8 not yet providing boost to slow PC market

Microsoft is pretty happy about how Windows 8 is doing, but 40 million license sales isn't exactly translating to a boon for the PC market. According to NPD, sales of Windows-powered devices are 21 percent lower than they were during the same time period last year -- October 21 through November 17. Of course, Windows 8 didn't actually hit shelves until the 26th, which may have skewed the numbers a bit as consumers held out for the latest and greatest from Redmond. The weakness of the desktop and laptop market are partially to blame, but while license sales for Windows 8 are outpacing its predecessor, there is some cause for concern. Specifically that, after a few weeks, the touch friendly revamp of the OS is only shipping on about 58 percent of new machines. Four weeks after the launch of Windows 7, it was preloaded on 83 percent of new hardware. Worse yet, according to the NPD, tablet sales "have been almost non-existent." Of course, things could pick up as we enter the holiday season, but it's not entirely clear that Windows 8 will be able to lift the sagging PC market on its back. The full PR awaits you after the break.

Steven Tyler tells Nicki Minaj: I'm not a racist!

By Rebecca Macatee, Eonline

AP, Getty

Former "American Idol" judge Steven Tyler is sorry that Nicki Minaj found comments he made about her to be racist. "I apologize if it was taken wrong, Nicki," the Aerosmith rocker said Tuesday on eTalk, a Canadian entertainment show.

More on the Nicki and Steven 'Idol' feud

"But I am the farthest from (being a racist)," he said. "I am the last thing on this planet as far as being a racist. I don't know where she got that out of me saying I'm not sure how she would've judged Bob Dylan."

Minaj was outraged after Tyler told MTV he thought the "Starships" singer "would have sent (Dylan) to the cornfield" if he'd come on "Idol." But Tyler insisted he only meant, "if Bob Dylan came on the show, he would've been thrown off."

"Maybe I spoke out of turn," he said. "But a racist I'm not, Nicki."

Are you surprised Steven Tyler apologized? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Fed survey: US economy growing at steady pace

(AP) ? A pickup in consumer spending and steady home sales helped lift economic growth from October through early November in most parts of the United States, according to a Federal Reserve survey released Wednesday. The one exception was the Northeast, which was slowed by Superstorm Sandy.

Growth improved in nine of the Fed's 12 regional banking districts, the survey said. Growth was weaker in New York, Philadelphia and Boston ? areas where Sandy caused widespread disruptions.

The survey noted that growth was better despite nervousness about the "fiscal cliff." That's the name for automatic tax increases and spending cuts that could kick in next year if Congress and the Obama administration can't reach a budget deal before then.

Hiring increased in more than half of the districts. But manufacturing shrank or slowed in seven regions and was mixed in two others.

"The weakening in the tone of the Beige Book is clearly linked to the massive disruptions and damage related to Hurricane Sandy and there is no evidence of a wider slowdown in the economy," said Terry Sheehan, an analyst at Stone & McCarthy Research Associates.

Sal Guatieri, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets, said the message from the survey was "the economy looks to have improved slightly in the current quarter, led by housing and consumers though businesses remain worried about the outlook."

The report, called the Beige Book, provides anecdotal information on economic conditions around the country from October through Nov. 14. The information collected by the regional banks will be used as the basis for the Fed's policy discussion at the Dec. 11-12 meeting.

Many economists believe the Fed could announce plans to buy more Treasury bonds at that meeting to replace a program set to expire at the end of the year. The goal of the program is to lower long-term interest rates and encourage more borrowing and spending.

The purchases would come on top of the Fed's mortgage bond buying program, which is intended to lower mortgage rates and make home-buying more affordable.

Recent government and private reports show the economy improved in October and early November, even as Sandy halted business activity along the East Coast.

Employers added 171,000 jobs last month and hiring in September and August was stronger than previously thought.

Rising home values, more hiring and lower gas prices pushed consumer confidence in November to the highest level in nearly five years. A better mood among consumers appears to have encouraged businesses to invest more in October after pulling back over the summer. And it could point to a stronger holiday shopping season.

There are already signs that consumer optimism is leading to more spending. A record number of Americans visited stores and shopping websites over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend, according to a survey by the National Retail Federation.

Still, if lawmakers and the Obama administration fail to reach a budget deal soon, the threat of tax increases could make consumers more cautious in the final weeks of the year.

Many economists say worries about the fiscal cliff could be among a number of factors that keep growth in the October-December quarter below an annual rate of 2 percent. That's too slow to make much of a dent in unemployment and could prompt the Fed to take further action at its next meeting.

The Beige Book said that price increases remained modest. The Fed said the prices of some construction materials were rising at a faster pace in Cleveland, Chicago, Minneapolis, Kansas City and San Francisco regions. Chicago Fed officials noted that food prices had eased in that region except for the price of meat.

Wage growth remained modest, constrained by the high numbers of people looking for work. But there were exceptions due to shortages of qualified workers. North Dakota reported rising wages for oil drilling workers. In Kansas City, wages were picking up for specialized workers in transportation, high-tech industries and energy. San Francisco saw stronger wage growth for truck drivers and health care workers.

Microsoft confirms Windows Phone 7.8 update due in early 2013

Mitt Romney can take some solace in his devastating loss on Nov. 6: at least he won the voters who really count. That's the thesis anyway of top adviser Stuart Stevens, who penned an op-ed in the Washington Post on Wednesday arguing that by winning wealthier and whiter voters, Romney secured the moral victory over Obama. "On Nov. 6, Mitt Romney carried the majority of every economic group except those with less than $50,000 a year in household income," Stevens wrote. "That means he carried the majority of middle-class voters. ...

Mo. Gov. Nixon backs expanded Medicaid; GOPs don't

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Breaking months of silence on the subject, Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon on Thursday embraced a broad expansion of Medicaid health care coverage for working adults, but his support was met with immediate criticism by Republican legislative leaders.

Nixon had remained noncommittal during his recent re-election campaign about the multi-billion-dollar Medicaid expansion called for under President Barack Obama's health care law. But Nixon said Thursday that he had analyzed the plan since the Nov. 6 election and concluded that expanding Medicaid to an estimated 300,000 additional people was both "the smart thing" and "the right thing to do."

Top Republicans reacted with resounding disapproval.

House Speaker Tim Jones said Nixon's proposal is probably dead on arrival in his chamber. Sen. Tom Dempsey, who is in line to become Senate president pro tem, said it's "very unlikely" that Republican lawmakers would approve a plan that encourages "an ever-expansive federal government."

Under a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year, each state can decide whether to expand Medicaid to adults earning up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level, as allowed under the federal law. The federal government would pay the full cost starting in 2014, but states would have to begin paying a 5 percent share in 2017 that would gradually increase to 10 percent by 2020.

Nixon vowed to "work tirelessly" to persuade lawmakers that the Medicaid expansion makes sense financially and would improve the health of thousands of their constituents.

"If we take a pass on billions of health care dollars ? dollars that come out of Missourians' paychecks ? that money will go to some other state. They'll get the benefit, and we'll get the bill," Nixon said in a conference call with Capitol reporters. "That's not smart, and that's not right."

Cost estimates for the proposed Medicaid expansion have varied greatly.

Nixon's administration said Thursday that it was still working on those numbers. A report released Wednesday by the Missouri Hospital Association and the Missouri Foundation for Health estimates a Missouri Medicaid expansion would cost the federal government $8.2 billion and the state $333 million between 2014 and 2020. A report released earlier this week by the Kaiser Family Foundation and Urban Institute projected the federal government's cost at $17.8 billion and the state's share at $1.6 billion from 2013 to 2022.

Republicans said that's more than either the deficit-plagued federal government or the budget-crunched state government should be spending.

"I have grave concerns about the affordability of it," said Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia. "It's a massive expansion of a welfare program" that he said could reduce the money available for other priorities such as public schools.

Republican Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, who has challenged the federal health care law in court, accused Nixon of trying to "hoodwink the voters" by waiting until after the election to announce his support for the Medicaid expansion. He called it "a radical, unaffordable agenda that will break the bank in Missouri."

Missouri's Medicaid program currently has one of the most difficult to meet eligibility standards in the nation for working adults who are neither disabled nor senior citizens. It provides coverage only to custodial parents who earn no more than 19 percent of the federal poverty level, or $3,627 annually for a single parent with two children. Children are covered for families earning up to three times the federal poverty level, with a premium that gradually fades to zero for those earning less than 1.5 times the poverty level.

The proposed Medicaid expansion would not change the eligibility levels for children. But that same parent of two could gain Medicaid coverage with an income of up to $26,344 annually. The plan also would extend Medicaid coverage to adults who have no children.

Missouri's Medicaid program covered 883,656 adults and children as of October.

Nixon's administration projects that additional 260,000 adults would enroll in Medicaid as a result of the eligibility expansion and an additional 30,000 children also would be enrolled as their parents became aware of the program.

Others have made significantly different projections. The hospital association's report estimated an additional 161,000 people would enroll in Medicaid because of the eligibility expansion. The Kaiser foundation's report estimated that 383,000 people would join Missouri's Medicaid rolls because of the expanded eligibility, and an additional 103,000 would gain Medicaid coverage because of other provisions in the federal health care law.

The study released by the hospital association also estimated that the increase health care spending would lead to 24,000 jobs across the state, generating additional taxes that could more than offset the state's costs. House Minority Leader Jake Hummel, D-St. Louis, cited the study's findings Thursday while praising Nixon's announcement.

If Missouri does not expand Medicaid, hospitals could take a financial hit. Their federal payments for treating the uninsured are due to decline under Obama's health care law on the assumption that hospitals would gain more money as more people are covered by private insurance and Medicaid. .

Republican legislative leaders said they understand the potential financial crisis facing hospitals, but they are reluctant to jeopardize Missouri's future finances.

"It is not free money. It is borrowed money coming from the federal treasury that we're going to pay for somewhere down the line ? our taxes will go up federally, our taxes will go up in the state, the burden will be on the budget," Jones said.

The Alexandrian ? Thought of the Day ? Why Do We Buy Consoles?

Why do we buy gaming consoles? PCs have better specs, broader utility, more versatile controllers, and a larger selection of games.

Lemme take a second to consider the consoles I?ve personally purchased.

The Consoles - X-Box 360, PS3, WiiI bought a PS3 because because it was the cheapest and best Blu-Ray player on the market. The ease with which the PS3 has been upgraded through firmware to stay current with the latest improvements in the Blu-Ray standard (including 3D) have repeatedly confirmed that this was a smart decision.

I bought an X-Box 360 after the last set of price cuts for the exclusives: Halo, Mass Effect, Gears of War, etc. No regrets. (I only regret the Kinect a little bit, because my wife absolutely adores the voice commands.)

I bought a Wii because the unique controller made possible gaming experiences that were otherwise unavailable. (And it was cheap enough that the novelty had sufficient novelty.)

In the previous generation, a PS2 was a no-brainer for me because of (a) the exclusives and (b) at the time, it was the only way you could sit on your couch and play on your TV. (These days, I?ve got a second PC hooked up to the TV for gaming.)

The other advantage of the current console generation is that it allows me to buy DRM-free copies of games that have DRM-crippled PC releases. I refuse to spend more than $5 on any title that has DRM (since I?m effectively renting the game, I?ll only pay rental prices for it), so there have been a lot of games that I would actually prefer to own for the PC that I?ve purchased for the console instead.

Looking ahead to the next console generation: It looks like DRM may actually end up being more prevalent on the consoles or possibly even mandatory (in which case, I definitely won?t be buying). The advantage of playing-on-the-couch has also vanished (because, as I mentioned, I?ve already got a PC hooked up to my TV). I also suspect the only exclusives we?ll be seeing are from Nintendo and Microsoft because nobody else will be able to justify losing 2/3rds of their potential sales.

I?ve seen people make fun of the Wii-U?s ?gimmicky? controller, but ultimately I suspect Nintendo has the right idea: The most effective way to justify a console?s existence is for that console to offer a unique experience. A box and a set of controllers that plugs into your TV no longer qualifies as that.

The other alternative, at least from my perspective, would be for a console to actually offer a comprehensive media center, much like the PS3 justified its purchase cost for me by also serving as my Blu-Ray player. The current generation of consoles kinda pretends that they?re going to do that, but the little walled gardens of limited, hard-to-access content that they currently feature make them look like pale jokes compared to the WD TV Live Hub that I currently have hooked into my TV (which allows me to both trivially stream online video and load any video file from a USB drive).

With that being said, it?s certainly plausible I could end up owning an X-Box 720. I really like Halo.

Practical tips to cope with year end stress

Research has shown that the most successful individuals ? the Type A personalities and perfectionists amongst us ? will be more susceptible to stress than others, which probably comes as no surprise. Brian Anderson, managing director of Dale Carnegie Training South Africa, says: ?It is next to impossible to avoid stress entirely. We can eat the right foods; we can get our eight hours sleep a night; we can take our yoga classes, but when stressful situations rear their ugly heads, even the most well-rested, green juice-guzzling, gym bag-toting individual may be at a loss as to how to cope with the problem.?

We all know the harmful toll that stress can take on our health, but in today?s fast-paced world of meetings, deadlines and around-the-clock pressure, how do we effectively manage this stress?

Dale Carnegie, an American writer and lecturer on topics such as self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training and public speaking, swore by a set of stress-management principles in his famous book, ?How to Stop Worrying and Start Living?. These principles assist in the management of stress and are still relevant today; 100 years after Carnegie first began teaching in 1912.

1. Live in day-tight compartments

You have had a terrible day. A critical deal has fallen through. Your internet won?t work. In short, good old Murphy dropped by and everything that can go wrong has. Now go home, and forget about it entirely. Easier said than done? ?Living in day-tight compartments is challenging but it is a habit we can cultivate. If we take life one day at a time and not worry about the next day, week or month?s commitments and concerns, we are a small step away from leading a better life. Worrying never improved any situation,? says Anderson.

2. Decide just how much anxiety a thing is worth and then refuse to give it more

You have just completed putting together your pitch in preparation for a meeting that you have with a potential new client the next day. It was a challenging brief but you put in the hours and you are proud of the finished product. You go to bed, intending to get a good night?s rest so you can be on peak form for your big pitch the following day, and then the inner dialogue starts: What have you forgotten? Should you have included that? Will it be good enough? ?It is normal that you will be worried, but decide on a ?healthy? level of anxiety and an applicable ?stress period?, and then refuse to give it any more thought. Allow yourself 15 minutes to go over everything in your head, and then turn off that mental laptop and go to sleep knowing you have given it your all,? explains Anderson.

3. Coping with a difficult situation

  • Ask yourself: What is the worst that can possibly happen?
  • Prepare to accept the worst
  • Try to improve on the worst

Client X is unhappy with the new software you have installed for him. After throwing around expletives that would make Eminem blush and threatening to fire your company, he slams down the phone. Ask yourself, what is the worst that can happen? Answer: He could fire us. Then accept that as a reality. Lastly, try to improve on the worst: pick up the phone tomorrow when he has cooled down, explain your perspective and offer an alternative. If nothing else, he will appreciate your effort.

4. Cultivate a mental attitude that will bring you peace and happiness

Optimistic, positive people are far better equipped to deal with stress, and the reason for this is that they are more inclined to see opportunity in their losses. So Client X has told you he no longer requires your services? Fine, that gives you capacity to find new business with a client who appreciates the work you do? and who is less inclined towards profanity. Positive people are not luckier than the rest of us, they just understand that they can?t control what life throws at them, but they can control how they react to it.

?These simple tools can be applied to every situation and will enable us to manage stress effectively,? concludes Anderson.

Atom smasher creates new kind of matter

Collisions between particles inside the Large Hadron Collider atom smasher have created what looks like a new form of matter.

The new kind of matter is called color-glass condensate, and is a liquidlike wave of gluons, which are elementary particles related to the strong force that sticks quarks together inside protons and neutrons (hence they are like "glue").

Scientists didn't expect this kind of matter would result from the type of particle collisions going on at the Large Hadron Collider at the time. However, it may explain some odd behavior seen inside the machine, which is a giant loop where particles race around underneath Switzerland and France.

When scientists sped up protons (one of the building blocks of atoms) and lead ions (lead atoms, which contain 82 protons each, stripped of their electrons), and crashed them into each other, the resulting explosions liquefied those particles and gave rise to new particles in their wake. Most of these new particles, as expected, fly off in all directions at close to the speed of light. [ Photos: The World's Largest Atom Smasher (LHC) ]

But recently scientists noticed that some pairs of particles were flying off from the collision point in correlated directions.

"Somehow they fly at the same direction even though it's not clear how they can communicate their direction with one another. That has surprised many people, including us," MIT physicist Gunther Roland, whose group led the analysis of the collision data along with Wei Li of Rice University, said in a statement.

A similar flight pattern is seen when two heavy particles, such as lead and lead, crash into each other. In this case, the collisions create what's called quark-gluon plasma ? a superhot soup of particles similar to the state of the universe just after the Big Bang. This soup can sweep particles in the same direction, explaining why their flight directions would be correlated.

But quark-gluon plasma isn't possible with lead-proton collisions, like the ones in the new study. Now researchers think a different state of matter, the color-glass condensate, may act in a similar way. The color-glass condensate's dense swarm of gluons may also sweep particles off in the same direction, suggested Brookhaven National Laboratory physicist Raju Venugopalan, who first predicted the substance, which may also be seen after proton-proton collisions.

The mechanism may depend on a weird quirk of particles called quantum entanglement. Two particles can be entangled so that they retain a connection even after they are separated, and an action on one reverberates on the other.

Entangled gluons in the color-glass condensate could explain how particles flying away from the collision point might share information about their flight direction with each other, Venugopalan said.

The intriguing phenomenon was not expected to result from the LHC's run of proton-lead collisions, which was meant to serve as a reference point for comparison to other types of collisions.

"You don't expect quark-gluon plasma effects" with lead-proton collisions, Roland said. "It was supposed to be sort of a reference run ? a run in which you can study background effects and then subtract them from the effects that you see in lead-lead collisions."

The findings will be detailed in an upcoming issue of the journal Physical Review B.

2004 Yamaha Road Star 1700 from Canada

I just purchased this bike 3 days ago. I spent a week on my buddies Road King and felt like I had to have one. My budget unfortunately was under $8000. So I started looking for a 2007-2008 Kawasaki Nomad. I found my Road Star on Craigslist from a dealer 2 days before my appt. to test ride a Nomad. I didn't have high expectations on the bike as I was really sold on the Nomad, but thought why not look take a peek?

The Road Star was about $1500 dollars cheaper than the Nomad. My first impression of the bike's appearance was very good. The classic look of the engine with no radiator is this bike's best visual attribute. This bike has a stage 2 jet kit, and Cobra Speedsters pipes.

Being mostly a sport bike fan, I was not prepared for the sound that burst forth once the bike was started. Holy cow! I did not know a metric cruiser could sound so good. Very deep lope and rumble. Taking it for a test ride was amazed at how smooth it was. Even though the sound coming from the end of the pipes gave sense of vibration, at speed there's hardly any.

My bike has aftermarket saddle bags and a quick release windshield. I love it, and for sure made the right decision.

Although experience is an important part of the process, you also need to look at the level of graphic design that they can provide as well.

    Excellent Graphic Design

Graphic design is a very important aspect of the web design business. Without graphic design, you can get a great looking website, and will find that your website will come out looking much better than you originally anticipated. Oftentimes, the actual web designers of the company are going to be completely separate from the graphic designers, and the to work together to produce a high-quality finishing product. Graphic design on its own can be quite expensive, and is factored into the overall price of the web design. This will help you to ensure that your website looks as good as possible.

    Coding Knowledge

With any web design project, you need to make sure that the company has an extensive amount of coding knowledge. This will help them to customize your website, and provide you with features that you otherwise would not receive. Depending on the level of customization that you are looking for, and the specific features that you build like, this can drastically affect the price of any web design that you are considering paying for, and should be something that is taken into account, but is not an end-all be-all., as you can hire a development company to work in conjunction with your vancouver web design company.

Western European Software Provider Expands Its Use of Kofax ...

    November 27th, 2012 by simran Leave a reply ?

Kofax? plc (LSE: KFX), a leading provider of Capture Enabled BPM? (business process management) solutions, today announced that a leading Western European telecommunications software provider has invested more than $850,000 to expand its Kofax solution to service an additional business unit in order to better support its growing capture and processing needs.

The customer will expand its use of Kofax Communication ServerTM to automate the capture and processing of an additional 10,000 fax, SMS, email and voicemail messages daily. Kofax Communication Server ingests email, fax, SMS, MMS, voicemail and telex communications through devices such as multifunction printers (MFPs), fax and phone systems. The software then replaces the manual processing of these communications by linking inbound and outbound communications channels and using them to automatically exchange the information between enterprise applications such as workflows, collaboration tools and repositories. This eliminates the delays and errors associated with manual input, enabling the customer to significantly increase operational efficiency and reduce infrastructure costs.

?Telecommunications providers need a solution that can scale quickly to accommodate growth,? said Howard Dratler, executive vice president of Field Operations at Kofax. ?By automating the exchange of information across the enterprise, customers benefit from a streamlined communication solution that gets the right information to the right person at the right time.?

The Kofax Communication Server? (KCS) enables the automated exchange of business critical information, linking both inbound and outbound services provided by devices such as fax and phone systems, media types that include email, FoIP, SMS, MMS, voicemail and telex, applications such as ERP, CRM and other enterprise applications, and social collaboration tools.

We doin' irie, mon: Rastafarian faith gaining more adherents in Jamaica

BULL BAY, Jamaica - The robed Rastafarian priest looked out over the turquoise sea off Jamaica's southeast coast and fervently described his belief that deliverance is at hand.

Around him at the sprawling Bobo Ashanti commune on an isolated hilltop, a few women and about 200 dreadlocked men with flowing robes and tightly wrapped turbans prayed, fasted, and fashioned handmade brooms ? smoking marijuana only as a ceremonial ritual.

"Rasta church is rising," declared Priest Morant, who wore a vestment stitched with the words "The Black Christ." ''There's nothing that can turn it back."

The Rastafarian faith is indeed rising in Jamaica, where new census figures show a roughly 20 per cent increase in the number of adherents over a decade, to more than 29,000. While still a tiny sliver of the mostly Christian country's 2.7 million people, Jalani Niaah, an expert in the Rastafari movement, says the number is more like 8 to 10 per cent of the population, since many Rastas disdain nearly all government initiatives and not all would have spoken to census takers.

"Its contemporary appeal is particularly fascinating to young men, especially in the absence of alternative sources for their development," said Niaah, a lecturer at the University of the West Indies.

Founded 80 years ago by descendants of African slaves, the Rasta movement's growing appeal is attributable to its rejection of Western materialism, the scarcity of opportunities for young men in Jamaica and an increasing acceptance of it.

For the black nationalist Bobo Ashanti commune, the Rastafarian faith is a transforming way of life, where Rastas strive to live a frugal existence uncomplicated by binding relationships to "Babylon" ? the unflattering term for the Western world. They share a deep alienation from modern life and Jamaica is perceived as a temporary harbour until prophecy is fulfilled and they journey to the promised land of Africa on big ships.

Life is highly regimented at the isolated retreat, cut off from most of the comforts of modern society. But it has a strong appeal for some, among them 27-year-old Adrian Dunkley, who joined the strict sect two months ago after years of questioning his Christian upbringing and struggling to find work as an upholsterer.

"This place is helping me a whole heap. I'm learning every day, and things are starting to make sense," the new recruit known as Prince Adrian said in the shade of one of dozens of scrap-board buildings painted in the bright Rastafarian colours of red, green and gold.

Other Rastafari adherents follow a more secular lifestyle, marked by a passion for social justice, the natural world, reggae music and the ritualistic use of pot to bring them closer to the divine.

A melding of Old Testament teachings and Pan-Africanism, Rastafarianism emerged in colonial-era Jamaica in the 1930s out of anger over the oppression of blacks. Its message was spread by the reggae songs created by musical icons Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear and others in the 1970s, and the movement has attracted a following among reggae-loving Americans, Europeans and Asians. Academics believe at least 1 million people practice it worldwide.

In the United States, the population of Rastafarians appears to be steadily growing due in part to jailhouse conversions, said Charles Price, associate professor of anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the author of "Becoming Rasta: Origins of Rastafari Identity in Jamaica."

"I regularly get letters from inmates seeking information," Price said. "I also get regular invitations to talk to prisoners at local North Carolina juvenile facilities, often from chaplains trying to figure out what to do."

Besides the well-known ritual use of marijuana, Rastas endeavour to reject materialist values and practice a strict oneness with nature, eating only unprocessed foods and leaving their hair to grow, uncombed, into dreadlocks.

Most of its many sects worship the late Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, even though he was widely considered a despot in his native land and paid little heed to his adulation by faraway Caribbean people whose ancestry tended to be West African and not Ethiopian.

The worship of Selassie is rooted in Jamaican black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey's 1920s prediction that a "black king shall be crowned" in Africa, ushering in a "day of deliverance." When an Ethiopian prince named Ras Tafari, who took the name Haile Selassie I, became emperor in 1930, the descendants of slaves in Jamaica took it as proof that Garvey's prophecy was being fulfilled. When Selassie came to Jamaica in 1966, he was mobbed by cheering crowds, and many Rastafarians insisted miracles and other mystical happenings occurred during his visit.

Adherents were long treated as second-class citizens in Jamaica and other Caribbean islands, looked down on for their dreadlocks and use of marijuana. But discrimination never stopped businessmen from cashing in on the faith, whose red, green and gold clothing and accessories earn millions in sales of T-shirts, crocheted caps and other items. Marley's music and the faith's pot-laced mysticism has also been used to promote Jamaica as a tourist destination

Rastafarian and veteran reggae luminary Tony Rebel said discrimination against Rastas has faded considerably in recent years in Jamaica.

"That discriminatory vibe has relaxed. But even so, we still we don't see a person with locks working in a bank these days, we don't see a person with locks in the police force as we would see in America or other places," Rebel said.

The first dreadlocked politician in Jamaica's Parliament was elected only last year.

Many Rastas advocate reparations for slavery and a return to Africa. The latter is a particularly fervent desire among those at Bobo Ashanti, who differ from other Rasta sects in the belief that their founder, King Emmanuel Charles Edwards, was the black incarnation of Jesus Christ.

Some Jamaicans dismiss the faith as bizarre.

"There is a whole part of the society that would still consider Rastafari to be delusional, and this is largely hinged on the claims made about Emperor Haile Selassie and also the consumption of (marijuana) and the idea of repatriation," Niaah said.

But for adherents like Prince Xavier, a 27-year-old Frenchman who moved to the Bobo Ashanti commune a couple of years after being introduced to Rastafarians in his native Paris, it's providing answers and a positive self-identity.

"I'm learning a lot about Rastafari and about our heritage," said the bearded Frenchman, clad in a red turban and black robe. "It is a matter of life and death."
