Nov 05, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that he would visit the houses of two internationally acclaimed elderly artists to grant them concessions provided by the government.
The government has initiated an interest free vehicle loan scheme for the benefit of senior journalists and artistes of the country and the President on Saturday handed over the first round of loans to recipients at a ceremony held at the Temple Trees.
During the event, the President has requested the chairmen of the state banks, to go to the senior journalists and artistes to provide their needs instead of requiring them to visit the banks repeatedly.
To symbolize this courtesy, President Rajapaksa will visit renowned musician and singer W.D. Amaradewa, 84, and internationally acclaimed cinematographer Lester James Peiris, 93.
He further has said that the government would consider this not as granting a loan but as doing a duty of state towards the artistes.
Over five hundred journalists received a free laptop and interest free bank loan for 1.2 million rupees for a vehicle under a relief loan scheme introduced by the government in the 2012 budget. The government will pay the interest to banks.
