Kenya Tourism Board to tap wedding, honeymoon segments in India

Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) will target niche segments like weddings and honeymooners as part of its strategy to increase inbound from emerging markets like India. KTB will promote beach destinations on the South and North Coast to target these segments. According to John Chirchir, Regional Marketing Manager, Emerging Markets, KTB, by targeting these niche segments the Tourism Board also wants to highlight products and destinations beyond wildlife safaris. ?Diani on the South Coast and Watamu on the Northern Coast are beautiful beach destinations. Both Watamu? and Diani were voted by CNN Travel as top 25 beach destinations in Africa,? he said. He added that the Indian community in Kenya is capable of designing Indian weddings with all grandeur. About 64,000 Indians visited Kenya last year, and KTB expects to achieve one lakh inbound from India in the next three years.

KTB will also promote relatively new regions like Laikipia in the Indian market in coming years. ?Indian market hasn?t explored Laikipia much so far. Laikipia can really deliver exclusivity and luxury experience to visitors,? Chirchir said. People can also experience the life and culture of the local people as there are local communities who thrive on dairying, farming, etc. There are exclusive resorts within the wild, which offer unique experiences to guests. Because of its location above the equator, visitors can see animals other than the big five, he added.

Golf Tourism is another niche segment that KTB plans to highlight in the India market. ?Indians love golfing, and Kenya has unique golf courses, both on the equatorial region, as well as on the coast. Kenya was accorded the best undiscovered golf destination award by International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO),? he said. The Great Rift Valley Golf Resort is an idyllic golf destination in Kenya. Nairobi, the capital city itself, is a golfing, wildlife, and entertainment destination, he said.

KTB had launched Magical Kenya online training programme for travel agents in India last month. Quite excited about the response the training programme received from the travel trade, Chirchir expected the programme to help KTB reach out to Tier-II and III cities in India in a big way.
